Astronomical clock face on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo depicts a detailed astronomical clock dial with a ringed face, zodiac symbols and Roman numerals around its edge. It is rendered in fine, precise linework with smooth grey shading that gives the dial depth and a three-dimensional appearance. The design is shown in black and grey only, wrapping across the forearm with a soft, dark shaded background behind it.

The brass dial in the lamp room has run four minutes slow since the winter gales, and Dad would have had the spanner out before I'd finished my tea. I'm not him. I stand on the iron stool with my sleeves rolled and look at the ring of Roman numerals, the little crab and the bull and the twins chasing each other round the edge, and I can't see what's wrong with it.

Dad built the thing himself the year the Harbour Board refused to pay for a clockmaker. He worked from a book he'd borrowed off the vicar, and he said the zodiac ring was there so a keeper could tell the tide from the stars when the cloud came down and the bell buoy went quiet. The inner disc turns with the moon. The hands are shadows of the brass pointer falling across the numerals, and on a good night you can read the water off them as clearly as off a tide table.
The night the Maggie Ross went onto the Skerry, the hands were right. I had the lamp turned and the fog horn going, and I read the dial the way he taught me: Cancer high, the hour hand past the VII, slack water in twenty minutes. I told the coxswain to wait. He waited. Nobody went out until the sea turned, and the boat came off the rock on the flood with all four of them aboard.
So I'm up the stool again with a rag and a tin of oil, polishing the cog that Dad never got round to fixing. Four minutes is nothing to the sea. But I'll not let it slide. Some things keep time because somebody keeps watching them.
