Pocket watch and roses on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed pocket watch with Roman numerals and visible gears sits above three shaded roses with small dewdrop highlights. The work uses fine greyscale shading and strong contrast, with a soft dark background fading into the skin around the design. The composition wraps over the shoulder and upper arm, with the watch as the focal point and the roses arranged beneath it.

Sit closer, you, where the lamp reaches. Look at the roses first, because the roses were there before the watch, back when the Pellow orchard still ran down to the river and the apples dropped faster than the pickers could gather them.

Old Tobias Venn kept the clock in the mill house. Every Saturday he wound it with a key no bigger than a thumb, and the gears went round behind the glass like a little town waking up. In the last week of August, when the wasps grew drunk on windfalls, his daughter Ada came up the lane with a pocket watch wrapped in a handkerchief. It had stopped at twenty past four. She wanted it going before the harvest fair, because the man who had given it to her had promised to be back by then, and a promise, she said, ought to keep time the way a watch does.
Tobias did not ask whose watch it was. He opened the back with a penknife, found the balance wheel snagged on a rose petal dried flat as paper, and laughed until he coughed. Dew had crept in through a crack in the case and stilled the hands, and the petal had been pressed in by someone who did not know better. He lifted it out with tweezers and set the wheel free, and the whole thing began to tick again, loud as a heartbeat in an empty room.
The man came back on fair morning with the sun full on the orchard. Ada was waiting under the third tree with three roses cut from the hedge, dewdrops still on their petals. Tobias says the watch ran true that day. He says it always did, once someone was honest about what had stopped it.
