Atom with orbits on a shoulder

Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of an atom shows a central nucleus of red, pink and teal dots surrounded by three elliptical orbits with small arrowheads and electron dots. The outlines are bold black with grey shading on the orbits, and the nucleus carries the only colour. The design sits on the shoulder and upper back, centred in the frame against smooth skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last rope went into the lorry on a wet Tuesday, coiled the wrong way because Marek had been crying over it and nobody wanted to say so. Three rings were left standing in the big top, rusted at the joins, and in the middle of the sawdust the Gyre sat like something a child had forgotten to pack away.

The Gyre was three steel hoops bolted at careful angles around a cage no wider than a bath. Inside, a rider held one hoop in each fist and spun until the hoops hummed, and at the heart of it all, where the rings crossed, a glass cluster of red, pink and teal beads glowed from a single bulb behind. Tomas had ridden it for eleven seasons. Aldous Pim, our ringmaster, had already sold the tent poles to a farmer in Lincolnshire and wanted the Gyre gone by Friday.

I found Tomas on the Thursday night, under the lamp, tightening the little arrowhead bolts one at a time with a spanner too big for his hand. I asked him why bother. He turned a bead between finger and thumb and said every orbit needs something at the centre to stop it wandering off to look for another sun. Then he climbed in, gave the hoops a push, and the whole structure sang low and steady while the empty seats watched, the sawdust settling in the light like slow snow.

The scrapman in Hull paid by weight and never asked what the glass was worth. I kept one teal bead from the centre, still faintly warm from the bulb, and it sits in my coat pocket now. Some mornings I turn it over, count the three rings it used to hold the way Tomas taught me, and hold on.
