Mandala tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala of layered petals and a central flower sits on the upper shoulder, drawn in dark fine linework with stippled dots along the outer rim. The design is in black and grey with no colour ink, and the shading is light, letting the thin lines and dots define the pattern. The photograph is taken close up from the side against a pale wall, with the design filling the right side of the frame.

Sit down there, where the wall keeps the wind off, and mind the dew on the step. You want to know about the flower in the north border. My grandmother kept that garden before me, and she used to say the flower was never planted at all. It was counted into being, petal by petal, the way you'd count out change at a fair you didn't trust.

She had a tin of seed dust, grey as slate, and every morning before the bees were up she knocked a single dot into the soil with the blunt end of a pen. Eight petals first, then sixteen, then the rings of lace that the frost liked to nibble. She never let the count go wrong. If she lost her place, the whole bed sulked for a week and the rain came sideways.
The turn came the spring the lane was sold. A lad from the cottages at the bottom, all elbows and questions, sat where you are sitting and asked why the middle flower had one more point than the others. She told him to count them himself. He counted the dots along the rim and got to forty-one, then looked at the grey dust on his own fingers and laughed, because the forty-second dot was a freckle on his wrist that she had been tapping in all along.
She never said whether she meant it. The north border still flowers in the same shape, and I do not touch it. Go on, count them if you like. Mind you start from the middle.
