Symmetrical fine line mandala on skin
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical, snowflake-like mandala made of thin black linework, with a small dotted rosette at the centre and eight radiating arms of curls, teardrop leaf shapes and dotted trails. The fine lines and stippled dots are even and crisp, and the design fills most of the frame against smooth, lightly lit skin. The image is in black ink only, with the tattoo set near the middle of the photo on a soft, plain background.

At ten past three the paediatric ward went quiet in the way it only does in December, when the radiators tick and the corridor lights are dimmed to half. Ellie in bed four was still awake, her drip stand pulled close like a sleepy dog. She wanted a snowflake, and I had nothing but a pad of copier paper and a pair of blunt scissors from the play trolley.

"Fold it in half," I told her, "then in half again, then once on the diagonal." She frowned at the lopsided triangle I'd made and pressed her thumb along each crease the way you'd smooth a bedsheet. "Now cut anything you like. Hearts, moons, a hedgehog if you want." She snipped a row of tiny notches along the folded edge, slow and serious, and when she opened the paper it had eight arms, every one the same, fanned out across the blanket.
She wasn't pleased. "I didn't make that. I only made one bit." I explained that the paper copied every cut through each fold, so one small choice became eight. She studied it for a long time, then asked whether that was how it worked for people too, one decision mirrored until it covered everything. I didn't have an answer that wouldn't sound like a card from the chaplain, so I taped the star to the window above her bed.
At six the sun came up grey over the car park, and the frost on the glass had grown its own patterns with no folds and no scissors. Ellie was asleep with one hand open beside the paper star, and her monitor kept its steady green beat. When I left at seven, the snowflake was still there, its arms throwing faint shadows across the frost.
