Autumn maple leaves full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve of autumn maple leaves and thin branches covers the arm from shoulder to wrist, shown in two side-by-side photographs. The leaves are rendered with soft shading, fine veining and blurred dark backgrounds that create depth. The palette is dominated by warm oranges, reds and yellows, with deep browns in the shadows.

Mara had been sent up the hill before first light, because the old dye-master said the maples only gave up their true red in the hour before frost. The kingdom of Veyl kept forty maples along the river road, and every autumn the crown bought their leaves to pay the soldiers. Nobody in the valley thought the trees were beautiful. They thought them useful, the way a bridge is useful. Mara thought otherwise, and had since she was small enough to be lifted onto the lowest branch to watch the whole valley go gold beneath her.
She climbed the eldest tree with the basket strapped to her back. Near the top the light came through in orange panes, and the branches spread out as thin as the veins in a moth's wing. She picked only the leaves that had turned from the inside out, the deep crimson ones that looked lit from behind. Below her, the tax-clerk was shouting for the cart.
She did not come down straight away. She sat in the fork of the trunk and watched the river carry off the leaves she had let fall, past the mill and the gallows and the toll bridge, towards a sea none of them would ever see. When the clerk finally climbed up after her, she handed him the basket of sour yellow leaves, and kept the crimson ones folded inside her coat.
