The composition wraps around the arm, with the tree on the front and the sun burst carrying onto the side view.

The maple came over from Yokohama in a crate stencilled fragile, and by the time Ada Brisley had it lifted into the clay at the bottom of Hollin Field, the leaves had already begun to go. Her father said it would never take. He said that about most things he could not afford to be wrong about, so she planted it anyway, on the coldest Saturday of November, with the lane still scattered with wet chestnut husks.

The tree took. Three winters later the old ash on the ridge was a grey ribbon of bark and the maple had learned the whole field. Every autumn it turned from the outside in, red at the fingertips first, then the crown lit like a struck match, and the men bringing the hay wagon up from the lower gate stopped to look at it instead of the sky.

The October storm stripped it in a single night. In the morning Ada walked up with her boots unlaced and found the trunk standing bare and black against a sky the colour of wet slate, the ground around its roots carpeted in leaves that looked like spilt paint. She sat down on the stump of the ash and did not get up. Her father came up the field a while later, saw her there, and said nothing. He sat beside her on the cold wood.

Then the cloud split along the ridge and the sun came through in a hard white burst, throwing its rays across the empty branches and down over the leaves, so that every one of them seemed to catch fire again. One leaf let go of the twig above them and turned over twice in the air before it settled on Ada's knee, the colour of a coal that had only been resting.
