Red orchid full sleeve tattoo

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

The sleeve shows large red and magenta orchid blooms with detailed petals, throats and stamens, set among dark green leaves that curl down the arm. The background uses soft teal and blue washes that fade behind the flowers. Five photographs from different angles show the sleeve wrapping from the shoulder to the wrist against a black backdrop.

At ten past three the corridor lights on Ward 7 dropped to their night setting, and Dee Pryce stood at the nurses' station with a clipboard she had not written on for twenty minutes. The orchid on the sill behind her had opened three new flowers since the handover, which nobody had expected, least of all the porter who had carried it up from the florist's in a paper bag and set it down without a card.

Mr Haddow in bed nine had asked her twice whether it was real or one of those plastic things. She told him real, and he said his late wife had kept orchids on every windowsill in their house in Paisley and none of them had ever flowered for her. Dee took his obs, checked the drip, and found herself drifting back down the corridor to look at the sill again, the red petals almost black against the glass.

Near five the sky beyond the car park went the thin blue-green of a bruise fading, and the leaves of the plant seemed to hang lower, as if they had been waiting all night to be noticed. At half four she pulled a chair up beside bed nine and sat with him for a while without talking much. The monitor ticked. He watched the window the way she had been watching the plant.

When the day staff came in at seven the lamp was off and the sill held one more bloom than it had at midnight, a magenta one, its throat open and pale. Mr Haddow had asked the healthcare assistant to leave it where he could see it from the bed.
