Autumn tree with two silhouettes on the back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A large tree with red, orange and yellow autumn leaves spreads across the skin, with a small bird perched on a branch. Two dark silhouetted figures sit at the base of the trunk, with a small animal lying beside them, and the figures and trunk are shaded in black and grey. The composition is centred on the spine, with the tree filling the upper area and the figures grounding the lower part of the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the oak behind the allotments finally turned last week, all rust and butter yellow, and I thought of you standing on the wall with a flask of tea that had gone cold before you got to the top. You always said the leaves were just the tree apologising for summer. I told you that was daft. I'm writing because Mr Okafor came round yesterday asking whether we'd sell the lower field, and I said I'd have to ask the one person who knows what this land is for, which is you, wherever you've got to.

The bird is back on the high branch, the little brown one with the crooked tail. It sits there every evening while the light goes off the church roof, and it never once comes down to the feeder. Dad would have called it a sign. You'd have called it a bird. I've started talking to it, which I expect you'd find hilarious. Last night the cat from next door sat under the trunk, same spot where we used to sit with our backs against the bark, and I found myself leaning on the roots the way you did, waiting for something to happen.

Nothing has happened, Nell. That's the honest news. The tree drops its leaves one at a time and nobody hurries it. I'm going to keep the field. I'll write again when the frost comes and the branches show their bones, though I suspect you'll be the one who wants to know what they look like. Come home when you're ready. The gate still sticks, but I've oiled it.

All my love, Ada
