Cherry blossom branch and peacock feather on ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A branch of pink cherry blossoms with grey and black shaded wood curls from the lower side of the torso up towards the back, with buds and flowers scattered along its length. A green and teal peacock feather with an eye motif sits near the waist, and a hand is raised at the top left of the frame. The blossoms use soft pink and magenta with smooth blended shading, and the composition follows the curve of the body.

The cherry tree had grown through the footbridge at Hollin Cross long before anyone thought to ask the railway whether it might. By April its branches reached over platform two like a hand held out for a ticket, and the blossom came down on the waiting room roof so thickly that Mrs Pardoe swept it off the bench every morning before the 7.12.

The peacock feather turned up in lost property in May, tucked inside a tin of boiled sweets someone had left on the 4.40. Nobody claimed it. I pinned it above the ticket window because it seemed a shame to put it in a box, and because the eye in it caught the light whenever the signal changed from red to green, as if it were keeping watch over the line.
A girl came in one Thursday asking about the feather. She didn't say whose it was. She stood by the timetable board with her coat open, looking through the window at the blossom, and said her grandfather had kept a branch of that same tree in a jar on his mantel for forty years, until the damp got into it. She wanted to know if the tree was still there. I told her the council had nearly cut it down twice, and both times the men with saws had stopped to eat their sandwiches under it and forgotten why they had come.
I took the feather down and gave it to her. She folded it into her coat without a word and walked out onto the platform, where the petals were already lifting on the wind and turning over the rails. The 4.40 came in on time for once, and the tree went on dropping pink onto the empty benches as if it had all the time in the world.
