Avocado with banner and pink flowers
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a halved avocado with a round pit at its centre, surrounded by green leaves and two pink flowers. A banner across the avocado reads LET'S AVOCUDDLE in lettering. Bold black outlines, flat fills and bright green, orange, yellow and pink ink give it a classic colour finish.

The tree on Gannet Island had grown from a stone a sailor left behind, and nobody on the island believed it would fruit. Old Hester Vane kept it anyway, wrapping the trunk in sacking every winter against the salt wind. When the first fruit finally came, it was so heavy the branch bowed to the grass, and she counted it twice before she dared pick it.

Her grandson Tobias, who could never sit still and talked to the gulls, asked what it tasted of. Hester cut it in half with the knife she used for mending nets. The flesh was green as the sea at noon, and the pit sat in the middle like a sleeping eye. 'Keep the stone,' she said, 'and plant it where the wind can't reach.' He carried it in his pocket to the cliff, dug a hole with a tablespoon, and sang badly so the gulls would stay quiet while it took root.
Years passed. Tobias became a man who fished the far banks and came home smelling of diesel and herring. He said little, but every harvest he left a fruit on his mother's doorstep with a scrap of ribbon knotted round it. The ribbon always read LET'S AVOCUDDLE in his square pencil capitals, and she laughed at him for it every season, though she kept each ribbon in the drawer by the teapot.
When Hester died, the tree was still bearing. Tobias hung the last fruit from the sacking, untied the ribbon, and read it aloud to nobody in particular. Down on the cliff, the saplings from the stone's first children were already taller than the fence, and the gulls had stopped bothering to sing back.
