Jurassic Park logo tattoo on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of the Jurassic Park logo sits on the upper arm, showing a black dinosaur silhouette in a red circular backdrop with the name lettered in a grey band. Bold black outlines, soft red and yellow shading and dark splatter details define the logo. Above it, part of a red rose with green leaves and partial lettering is visible against a black top and a white wall.

Dear Nell,

The sign went up on Tuesday, though the wind had other ideas and tried twice to take it off the scaffold. Mr Pargeter wanted a red circle, a black beast stalking across the middle of it, and the word PAVILION lettered in a grey band underneath. I told him the beast looked more like a hound with a grievance, so I spent Monday night sketching its jaw again on the back of a feed sack until it looked like something that could eat a Morris Minor.
Two things I should tell you. The first is that the fairground people won't pay until the Bank Holiday, so we've been living on tea and the kindness of the chip shop on Bridge Street. The second is that the red kept running in the damp, bleeding into the grey band like a bruise coming up, and I had to rub it back with a rag three times before it sat right. Pargeter called it character. I called it a waste of linseed.
On Thursday a girl of about nine stood under the scaffold with her hands behind her back and asked whether the thing on the sign was real. I told her it was a painting of something that had been dead for a very long time. She thought about that, then said, "So it's just waiting," and ran off before I could argue.
I've been thinking about her all week. The beast isn't waiting. Nothing on a sign waits. I suppose I just wanted you to know I finished it straight.
Love, Tom
