Back and forearm tattoos with a beaded white top

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A woman is photographed from the side and behind, showing a large dark tattoo across her upper back and a coloured tattoo on her forearm. The forearm piece appears to feature green, orange and red floral forms with shading, while the back design is mostly dark ink with fine detail visible around the wings or feathered shapes. The composition is soft and natural, with a pale background and a sheer beaded top that partly covers the shoulder.

The cape had to be finished before the Thursday shift, because the seven-forty to Carlisle left at seven-forty whether or not anyone had stopped fretting over it. I sat in the back room above the parcel office with a tray of white glass beads, sorting them by size the way my mother sorted buttons, and listened to the trains rattle the window frames below.

The customer had brought her own sketch on the back of a platform timetable: wings spread across a sheet of sheer chiffon, rosettes of stones where the shoulders would sit, and one instruction underlined twice. Nothing dark. She wanted it to catch the light like frost on a shed roof. So I built each rosette petal by petal, eight stones to a bloom, and ran a chain of pearls down each sleeve like a line running off the edge of the page.

On the third evening I did something I had not been asked to do. Under the hem, where nobody would look until the wearer lifted her arm, I stitched a single thread of green silk, the exact green of the stems in the sketch she had shown me on the first day. It was a small disobedience. Nobody checks the inside of a hem.

She came back on the Thursday with her ticket folded in her palm and asked whether the thing would survive a long journey. I said it would. At the barrier she raised her arm to wave, the sleeve lifted with it, and a flash of green ran the length of the platform between the white stones like a signal changing from red to go.
