Small back and ankle tattoos, seated woman
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman sits with her back to the camera, her head turned away and one arm raised to her hair, so her face is not visible. A small black line tattoo sits between her shoulder blades, and a second small tattoo is visible on her lower leg near the ankle. The plain white backdrop and soft natural light keep the focus on the skin and tattoos, with the black lace top and light blue jeans in the foreground.

You have been pegging out the kitchen garden at Hallam since before the frost lifted, the ash cord hissing through your fingers as you pull it taut between two iron stakes. Mr Ashdown wants the beds laid to a true right angle, and the cord is the only measure he trusts. Every knot you tie is a small promise that the rows will hold.

The old plan lies in the potting shed, drawn in brown ink on paper gone soft as cloth. Someone long ago sketched a spiral at the centre of the walled garden, a path that turns in on itself and then, at its last loop, lifts out over the wall like a thought escaping. Nobody has walked it in forty years. The gardeners call it the Snail and mow around it.
On the third morning you find the spiral trodden flat in one place, a narrow track of bruised grass leading in. Someone has been coming in before you, sitting at its heart with their back to the gate, watching the wall where the sun first climbs. You do not ask who. You take your cord and lay the final turn true, pegging it so the loop can be walked again.
When Ashdown comes out at noon he stands at the centre, squints at the new line, and says nothing for a long while. Then he steps onto the path and follows it round, one slow turn after another, until he reaches the wall and the light lands on his shoulders. "Leave the stakes in," he says. You do.
