Badger with wheat and flower on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A badger in profile sits above two wheat stalks that curve up either side, with a yellow flower and green leaves at the base. The badger is shaded in greys and black with a bold outline, while the wheat and flower use warm orange, gold and yellow tones. The design is centred on a smooth area of the lower leg and fills the frame.

Brother Osric swore the badger came every harvest, though none of us ever saw it come. We only saw what it left behind: a trampled furrow in the wheat at the bottom of the abbey orchard, and a single flower pushed up through the mud beside the well, as if someone had planted it on purpose and then walked away.

Mind you, the abbot did not like animals in the garden. He said they dug under the wall and undid a whole winter's work. So when the bailiff's boy came up the hill with a trap and a grin, the abbot sent him down to the orchard with orders to bring back the creature alive, or not at all. Whatever he meant by that, the boy went off whistling.
He came back at dusk with an empty sack and mud to his knees. Brother Osric asked him where the beast was, and the boy only pointed at the wheat. The stalks had been cut neatly, two sheaves laid out in curving arms, and in the middle of them sat the badger, grey as an old monk's habit, watching the gate with the patience of a creature who knew the harvest was ours to lose and not its own.
So the abbot left the wall alone that year. Some say he was ashamed. I say he had simply seen what the rest of us had missed: that a badger in the wheat, with a flower at its feet, is the nearest thing to a blessing a poor house ever gets, and that the wise keep their traps in the shed.
