Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon raccoon with grey shading and a white muzzle is shown mid-motion, with a green hummingbird-like bird at upper left and scattered orange, yellow and red leaves around the figure. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft grey shading on the raccoon and a loose green wash behind the bird. The composition wraps diagonally across the upper arm, with the raccoon central and the bird balancing the top left corner.

Pell the raccoon had lived under the potting shed for nine winters, and in all that time he had never once lost an argument with a leaf. So when the October gales came off the moor and blew the whole beech wood into Hollin Lane, he took it personally. He dragged a feed sack out past the gate, stamped his grey feet in the drifts of gold and rust, and swore to every hedgerow in the parish that he would have the lot of them by supper.

The hummingbird arrived before he had caught his breath. Tilly Fennick was a green scrap of a thing with a voice like a kettle lid, and she hovered at the gatepost with her beak tilted like a magistrate. She offered him a wager. If he could fill the sack before the frost came down, she would hand over the blackberry jam she had been hiding in the rectory bushes since August. If he failed, he would keep the shed quiet for the rest of the year and stop calling her a dragonfly with an opinion.
He snatched at the leaves all afternoon. He caught a fistful of oak, lost it to a sideways puff, caught a red one that turned out to be a bramble leaf and bit it in disgust. Tilly looped above him, whistling, scooping up every loose scrap he dropped and tucking it under her wing. By dusk the sack was still flat as a pancake and Pell was sitting in the lane with his tail wrapped round his knees.
Tilly landed on his nose and tapped the last orange leaf into his paw. "You had the wind against you," she said. "Next year, try the sack the other way up." Pell looked at the leaf, then at the empty lane, and laughed until the frost came down and he had to go home for his supper.
