Hedgehog and flowers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A small animal with a pointed snout and rounded ears, possibly a hedgehog, faces forward with a soft, glossy expression. Sprigs of flowers and leaves wrap around its base and climb up the side of the design. The shading is soft and smooth in greys and black on a thigh, with a plain indoor floor and furniture visible behind.

The hedgehog came up through the nettles at dusk, the way she always did, nosing past the cracked chapel step at Harrowgate Keep. Old Agnes Pell had given up on the roof years ago, but she still set a saucer of bread-soaked milk by the postern gate, and the creature never once failed to find it. She told the empty courtyard that it was a greedy old thing, then went back to counting the bricks the rain had loosened.

That autumn the lord's surveyor arrived with a measuring chain and a letter saying the north tower would be pulled down before the frost. Agnes read the letter twice at the kitchen hearth, folded it into her apron pocket, and said nothing when he chalked crosses on the walls. He was young and kind enough to offer her a cup of tea she did not want, and he left before dark, grumbling about the flowers that had pushed up through every gap in the masonry.

Agnes did not argue with the flowers. The following spring she went out with a trowel and found the hedgehog's trail winding between the tower's footings, where she had never thought to look. Wild thyme, campion and a pale creeping bellflower had been coaxed into the mortar cracks, and each stalk was tucked behind a stone the animal had clearly nudged aside with its snout. Someone had been tending the ruin all winter, and it was not her.

When the surveyor came back in June with his men, he stopped at the foot of the tower and simply stood there with the chain hanging from his hand. Agnes watched him from the gatehouse, the saucer warm between her palms. He coiled the chain back into its leather case, wrote something small in his notebook, and the north tower still stands there, one wall gone soft with green.
