On the fourth floor of the old hospital, where the lift stuck between floors whenever it rained, a porter called Tam swept the corridors after the visitors had gone home. One night, in the bin beside bed nine, he found a five hundred thousand note folded into a square no bigger than a matchbox. The paper was soft as cloth. The bearded man on it looked up at him with the patience of someone who had seen worse floors.

The old man in bed nine was awake, as old men on night wards always are. "That is for the sweeping," he said, before Tam could speak. "My grandmother said money goes where the work is, the way water goes downhill. You have been sweeping this corridor since the autumn. Nobody has thanked you."

Tam said he could not take it. The old man said that was foolish, and that foolishness was a luxury for men who had a bed to sleep in after their shift. So they argued in whispers until the morning nurse came in with the tea trolley, and Tam tucked the note into his cap for safekeeping.

He did not spend it. He took it home on the bus, unfolded it on the kitchen table, and smoothed the creases with the side of his hand. Then he pinned it above the mop bucket in the cupboard at work, where the bearded man could keep an eye on the lift doors. Some nights the lift still stuck. Tam said good evening to it now, and to him, and went on sweeping.
