Banknote portrait in bandana on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a banknote-style portrait of a man with a bald crown and long hair, his lower face covered by a patterned bandana with a white paisley outline. The portrait sits within a banknote-shaped border with dotted edging, and the shading is soft and detailed, with strong contrast in the eyes and bandana. The design is in black and grey and fills the back of the hand, centred on the knuckles.

Come up here where the lift's broke, mind the third step, it's been loose since the Jubilee. Right. You want the one about the gentleman on the banknote. Everybody on Fenwick House knew him, though none of us had ever seen him face to face, not properly.

He came down off the note the winter the boiler failed on the fourteenth floor. Nobody saw him climb out. Mrs Okafor swore he was stood by her bin store one morning with his hair all wild and his great bald crown shining in the sodium light, and he had a paisley bandana pulled up over his mouth like the lads who ride the bikes past the car park. Said he didn't want to be recognised, not by the men in the glass offices who'd printed him and not by the men who'd asked him to pay for things he never bought.
So he went round the blocks. Knocked on doors at four in the morning and left a folded note under each mat, crisp as the day it was pressed. Paid the electric on the ground floor. Paid old Dessie's arrears. Never once took a penny for himself, which is more than you can say for the landlord.
Then one night a girl from flat 41 followed him up to the roof to ask his name. He lowered the bandana just enough to smile, and she said afterwards his eyes were the only honest thing she'd ever seen printed on paper. He tucked the last note into her hand and folded himself back into the wind.
Mind your feet on the way down. The step's still loose.
