Sally and Jack on a heart tree thigh tattoo

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows Sally and Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas seated on a bare tree whose branches form a heart shape. Three jack-o'-lantern pumpkins sit at the base of the trunk. The figures and tree are shaded in grey with bold outlines, while the pumpkins carry orange, green and blue colour. The design fills the outer thigh, with a second person's forearm and partial script visible at the right edge.

Dear Nell,

The frost came in Tuesday and finished off the pumpkins Dad left in the bottom field, the lopsided ones nobody would buy. I brought the three best up to the yard in the wheelbarrow, half-rotted and furred with white, and I've spent every evening since with Granny's bread knife carving faces into them. You'll say it's daft to be carving in December. Ruth from the mill says a candle makes a lantern out of anything, so I'm trusting her.

The old ash by the gate lost its last leaves in the storm, and now it stands against the grey sky with two branches bowing toward each other and a gap between them the exact shape of a heart. Tom wanted it felled for firewood. I told him it would have to fall on me first. Every morning I walk past it with the feed buckets and I swear the frost draws a little outline on the bark, as if someone has been tracing it with a fingertip overnight.

I've been reading Mum's old blue picture book to Ellie's boys, the one about the lanky skeleton king who tumbles out of his holiday into the snow, and the thin pale girl in the patched dress who sews him back together. Ellie's youngest asked why she bothered, when he'd been so wrong about everything. Ellie said that was exactly why. I didn't have an answer for her then. I think I do now: you don't mend someone for being right.

Last night I set the three lanterns under the ash, one leaning on the other like they'd had a drink. The candles caught, and for a minute the whole crooked heart glowed orange and the frost along the lane went gold. Come up at New Year. Bring the good thermos. I'll show you.

Love, Jo
