Banknote rose on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A rose is rendered in realistic shading, its petals shaped from printed banknote paper with visible engraved lines and the words ONE HUNDRED across the bottom. The tattoo covers the back of a clenched hand and continues with similar bill patterning onto the forearm at the top of the frame. The image uses only black and grey ink with strong contrast and soft gradients, set against a white textured fabric background.

Mr Okonedo had the plate on the bench before the kettle boiled, and he did not look up when Ruth came in with the tea. "Three days on one face," he said. "They want a flower on the note, and nobody in the building will tell me who's paying for it."

Ruth set the mug by his elbow and saw the proof pinned to the board. It was a plain hundred, its portrait scraped away and a rose put in its place, petals curling like paper that had been folded and unfolded too many times. The engraving lines ran the way they always did, fine and close, but they bent around the bloom as if the bloom were the thing that mattered and the money only its paper.
"Who ever heard of a rose on currency?" she said.
"Nobody who was paid to care." He tapped the words along the lower edge with the burnisher. ONE HUNDRED, cut deep so the ink would sit in the grooves. "That's the trick. Keep the numbers true and the rest can be as wild as you like. A forger needs the lettering right. Nobody checks a flower."
On the third night he left the plate under the lamp and went home. Ruth stayed to clean the rollers and found the proof folded in half and tucked under the tea mug, the rose turned inward, its petals pressed flat against the wet ring the mug had left. She smoothed it out. The ink had lifted in one place, a single petal gone pale, as though someone had tried to make it bloom again and lost their nerve halfway through.
