Sit closer, the lamp's nearly done and I'll not waste oil on the dark. You've all heard about the clockmaker on Tallow Lane, the one who wound the Guildhall tower every Sunday for forty years. Well, this is what his apprentice saw the night the big clock stopped.

It was past two, the rain come off the river in sheets, and Ada Pringle was up the tower steps with a candle in her teeth and a pocket watch in her fist. The watch had been her father's. It kept the true hour when the tower lied, and everyone in Marrow Street knew it. She reached the dial just as the gears gave a groan like a cow in a flood, and she saw the hour hand begin to sag.

It sagged the way bread dough sags in a warm kitchen. Brass ran down the spindle and dripped off the pins. The watch in her palm went soft and wet and slid over her knuckles, cool as a fish, until it hung off her fingers like a handkerchief drying on a line. She said a word her mother would have boxed her ears for. Then she did the only sensible thing and wrapped her hand around the drooping face and held on.

The tower stopped being a tower after that. The chimes came out thick and slow, like a man talking in his sleep, and by dawn the whole street was sure the hour had lost its nerve. Ada came down the steps with the watch still draped over her hand, ticking softly, and she never let go of it again.
