Ornamental lotus tattoo on the upper back
Dotwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A large ornamental lotus sits centrally on the back of the neck, with a mandala-like circle at its base and scrolling foliage extending across the upper back. The design is built from fine stippled dots and shaded outlines, with some areas filled in more densely for depth. The image is shown in greyscale against a dark vignette, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Tuesday, 4.10am. The ovens were lit before the streetlamps had given up on Harrow Road, and I have spent the last hour doing what Dad called listening to the dough. It changes under the heel of my hand: slack, then tight, then something like a held breath. He always said you cannot rush a lotus. He meant the pastry, the layered kind he made for the church fête, petals folded over petals until the thing looked poured rather than built.

Today I piped the scrolls freehand, the way he showed me the winter I turned fourteen, a curl of cinnamon sugar running out from the centre like smoke off a match. Every swirl had to reach the edge of the tray without a break, or the whole design would come out lopsided. The seed mandala went on last, a ring of caraway pressed in with the back of a teaspoon, dot by dot, because my hands wanted something slow that could be fixed if it went wrong. Mum came down at five and didn't say anything. She put the kettle on and stood by the window with her arms folded.
Aunt Ife's letter is still on the side, unopened. I know what it says: the house is sold, and there are boxes of his things to be sorted before the end of the month. I haven't decided whether I'm going. At six the window goes the colour of weak tea and the first tray comes out. The top loaves have split along the scored lines and opened into soft golden petals, exactly as he always promised they would. I wrap the first one in paper and write nothing on it. Some things don't need a label.
