Bare tree on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a leafless tree with a thin trunk and many fine branches spreading into a rounded crown. The linework is single-needle and black, with no shading or fill. The tree sits centrally on a pale forearm, with a grey top and dark green foliage blurred behind.

Hand me the tray, love, and mind the flour. No, leave the lamp low, the tree can see us well enough. Out past the glass, that bare one on the corner of Tanner's Row, the one with its crown spread like a hand held up to stop a cart. Your great-grandmother used to say it had never worn a leaf in its life, and that was why the bakers built our ovens against its roots.

Every branch is a hard winter. Count them with your finger on the cold glass. The thin ones at the top are the years that nearly finished us. Old Mrs Ansty swore the tree grew one more twig the year her husband went to sea and didn't come home. She'd stand at that window at four every morning with her hands white to the wrist, feeding the first batch in, and she'd say the tree was keeping watch for him.

The night the bells rang for the armistice, the whole street came out in their nightclothes and tied ribbons to the branches: a red one, a blue one, a torn strip of somebody's wedding veil. In the grey light they hung like fruit. Mrs Ansty came out with the first loaves steaming in her apron and laughed until she had to sit on the kerb. Then she went back in, put the kettle on, and said the tree had finally got its harvest. That's the only time anyone ever saw it dressed.

Now. Count the branches with me. Eleven. Eleven hard winters and not one of them ours to keep. Pass me the peel, and let's get the morning fed.
