The Bramley came down in the night again, so I have left the windfalls for the wasps and gone out with the barrow at first light. The grass was wet enough to soak my boots through, and the whole orchard smelled of cider and crushed grass, which is the smell of September for me now, whatever the calendar says.

You will remember the old pear by the far wall, the one Dad grafted the year you were born. He cut the scion with that brown-handled knife and bound it in raffia so tight the bark went white. The trunk has split at the join and I have been propping it with two ash poles, but the roots have spread out under the nettles like the curls on the gate sign, and I cannot bring myself to dig them up.

Mrs Hollis from the lane says we should take cuttings before the frost. She says it in the same voice she used when she told us the church clock was wrong, so I am not sure whether to believe her. I have asked Tom to come and look at the props on Saturday. He says he will, which is what he said about the gutter.

Come up if you can. The fruit is mostly small this year, but the ground under the pear is dry and warm, and there is a patch by the roots where Bess used to lie in the afternoons, still bare where the grass will not grow. Bring the good secateurs. Do not let Tom near the ladder.
