Bare tree tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A branching tree with a thick trunk and bare, spreading limbs is tattooed on the inner wrist, with the hand raised at the top of the frame against a dark background. The tree is outlined in black with fine, tapering branches and some shading along the trunk. Small orange and teal dots scattered through the branches suggest leaves, and the rest of the design is left in black ink.

Dear Ruth,

You will laugh when I tell you the old medlar by the cloister wall has finally given up pretending. Brother Anselm went out with the secateurs on Tuesday and came back saying the whole crown was dead to the bark. I went and looked, and he was right. Grey limbs, nothing but rooks sitting in it like bad news. Prior Columba wants it cut for firewood before Advent.
But this morning the novices found something hanging from the lowest fork. Someone, and nobody will own to it, has tied on little scraps of wool, one orange and one the green of sea glass, each knotted through a twig. Forty or fifty of them. Brother Anselm says it is the work of the boy from the dairy, who cannot read the Psalms but can climb anything. I suspect it is Sister Mary Joseph, who sat up with the tree the winter her father died and has never said so.
I could not bring myself to speak to the prior. I stood under it at Vespers with the bell going and thought it looked like a fire that had been put out and then remembered, very quietly, what it was for. So the saw stays in the shed. Come at Easter if the roads allow, and bring your good boots, because the mud by the orchard gate is worse than ever.
Your loving brother, Thomas
