Black and grey barn owl in flight on a branch with a red moon behind it, tattooed on the calf in a loose sketch style.

Barn owl in flight with red moon on a leg

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A barn owl with spread wings perches on a bare branch, its talons gripping the wood. The feathers and face are rendered in loose, sketchy black linework with grey shading and scattered dots. A large red wash circle sits behind the owl, and a thin red vertical line runs down beside the branch.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My father wanted the owl shot the week the stubble burned. He stood in the yard with the twelve-bore broken over his arm and said a barn owl on the ash was a sign of nothing good, and I said that was his grandmother talking, not him. The moon had come up red over the far field, the way it does when the smoke sits low, and the owl sat on the bare branch as if it had been hung there to watch the fire.

I went up the ladder after dark with a torch I didn't switch on. The loft smelled of old straw and mice. Through the slats I watched the owl lift from the ash, pale as a dish in the light, and drop onto the lane wall where the voles run. It was the quietest thing I had ever seen. Its feathers made no sound, only a faint hush, like someone turning a page in the next room. Each time it struck, a few grey specks of dust drifted up behind it.

The fire reached the hedge on the third night. We stood at the gate with buckets while the moon hung over the smoke, a red coin with a dark line of ash drawn across it. The owl came through the gap with its wings spread wide and did not swerve. I thought it would burn. Instead it landed on the branch nearest the barn and watched the flames stop short of the fence post, as though it had been counting them.

My father leaned the gun against the dairy door that morning and did not mention omens again. That evening there was a single grey feather on the sill of the loft, and below it the black field lay smoking, with a red thread of ember running along the edge of the hedge where the owl had flown.
