You will not believe what the raven did on Tuesday. I had the last of the red roses tied against the byre wall, the ones your mother sent over on the boat, and I turned my back for the length of one kettle. When I came out, that black devil was sitting on the biggest bloom as if he had paid the rent on it. He opened his beak at me, wide as a letterbox, and let out a sound like a rusted gate. Angus says he has been stealing bootlaces and bottle tops since spring, and the old men call him the Minister because he never shuts his mouth.

I tried to shoo him off with the broom. He only shifted his claws on the petals and looked at me sideways with that orange eye, bored, the way the factor looks at a late rent. The stem bent under him but didn't snap, which is more than I can say for my back.

Then the post boat came in with a parcel from Glasgow, and I forgot him for an hour. When I went back he had gone, and so had the rose's best head, cut clean through. Not chewed. Cut. I have decided I am glad of it, and I have not told Angus yet, because he would only want to know what the Minister was paid.

Write soon, and tell Ruth the scarf was a disaster but I wore it anyway.
