Batman and Joker full sleeve tattoo
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve on the right arm shows Batman in a painted, comic-book style with a blue cape, red shading and an orange bat emblem on the chest. Below him, a grinning figure with exposed teeth and a yellow-orange city skyline with the letters HA fill the lower part of the arm. Smooth gradients and bold outlines give the piece a bright, illustrative finish.

The lift at Carrow House had been dead since Easter, so Mo Price carried a tin of orange emulsion up fourteen flights with a brush wedged behind his ear. Somebody on the ninth landing had scrawled a rude word in marker over the lino, and the paint on the walls had gone the colour of weak tea. He stopped at each half landing to rest his arm and listen to the flats through their doors: a telly, a baby, a man arguing with a kettle.

Mrs Abara had lived on the top floor for thirty years, and she wanted the stairwell to look like the films she had watched in Lagos before she ever saw a real city. 'Gotham,' the boy on eight called it, when he saw the sketches pinned to the door. Mrs Abara had pressed a folded fiver and a sandwich in foil into Mo's hand. 'Put a bat up there somewhere. Somebody should be watching the stairs.'
By the time the skyline was finished, the light through the top window had gone thin and gold. Mo had painted the towers in four shades of orange, and the letters HA stacked up the wall in a scrawl that made the boy laugh every time he came through. Mo painted the bat last, a dark shape across a grey chest, then the grinning face beside it, teeth bared, a joke nobody on the landing had asked for.
Tomas came out with a dented tin of his own, studied the Joker for a long while and said the grin was the best bit. Mo said the bat would hold its own. Somewhere below them the lift gave a single cracked ring, the first sound it had made since Easter, and the boy ran down the stairs to see what had woken it.
