Black and grey realism tattoo of a Batman comic scene with BATMAN lettering and a bat symbol across the upper arm.

Batman comic scene on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo covers the upper arm, with a bat symbol above the word BATMAN in block lettering at the top. Below, a figure in a cowl stands among falling rain beside other comic-style characters, with a dark shadowed area at the bottom. The work uses black ink and grey shading with soft highlights, and the composition fills the arm from shoulder to elbow.

The rain had been coming down on Greaves Street since the lamps came on, and Dennis Ashcombe had given up trying to keep his stock dry. He was stacking the last of the evening editions under a tarpaulin when a shape slid across the light above the Corn Exchange, wide-winged and silent, and dropped onto the parapet as if it had always lived there.

Below, two lads were running towards the bus station with a leather satchel swinging between them. The shape did not run. It came down the wall in one long fall and caught the nearer lad by the collar. The rain fell through the streetlight in grey stripes while the satchel burst open and a hundred pale tickets scattered across the wet pavement like confetti at a bad wedding. Dennis watched the cowled figure stand over the lads without raising a hand, and the lads, to their credit, did not argue.

When the sirens came up the hill, the figure was already gone, a black fold of cloth over the rooftops. Dennis walked out with his torch and picked tickets out of the gutter for ten minutes. Each one was a raffle stub for the church fête, printed in faded green, and on the back someone had written the same three words in careful capitals: THANK YOU, MOTHER.

He kept one. The next evening, when he pulled up his shutter, there was a chalk bat drawn on the metal, wings spread wide and a little crooked, as if whoever made it had been in a hurry and had wanted to be sure someone saw.
