Stairway through clouds on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A stone stairway climbs diagonally up the arm through layered clouds, with shafts of light falling beside it and a glowing light above the shoulder. Soft grey shading and fine detail create depth, while the clouds and birds carry pinkish tones. The composition fills the upper arm and shoulder, with the birds placed on both sides of the stairs.

Put that bread down and listen, for the old men at the well argue about this part and I will not have it told wrong. The steps above Hallam Ketz were not cut by kings. They were cut by a stonemason named Idrinna, who buried her husband beneath the third landing and swore she would climb until she reached the place he had gone.

For nine summers she worked alone. Each morning she carried her chisel up the hill, and each evening the limestone dust settled grey on her shoulders like the cloud that sits on the peak. The villagers brought her water and laughed at her, then stopped laughing when the stair kept climbing past the sheep paths and into the mist. What they could never explain was the light. At dawn, shafts of it fell down the hillside beside the steps, as if someone above were opening shutters, and the doves came down through them to drink from her cupped palms.
On the last morning she did not return to the quarry. Her apprentice, a boy with ink-black fingers, went up after her and found the chisel laid neatly on the top step, and beside it a single feather, pale as a rose petal at the edges. He waited until the sun was high and the clouds had closed over the peak. Then he set his foot on the first stone, and it was warm, as if someone had only just climbed it.
Mind your sandals on the way out. The steps are steeper than they look.
