Bear filled with forest on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large bear in side profile is filled with a layered forest scene of pine trees and misty hills, creating a double exposure effect. The linework is soft and the shading moves from pale grey at the head and back to dense black in the tree shapes. The collage shows three views of the tattoo on a person's upper back, with the bear centred between the shoulder blades and a black strappy top visible in two of the photos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bear came down to the ford the morning after my father's boat went under, and I did not run. My grandmother had told me that bears carry the forest inside their coats, and a child who runs is only prey, while a child who stands still might be remembered as a sensible one.

Its fur was pale across the shoulders where the mist sat heaviest, grey as the far hills I had never climbed. Lower down, toward the haunches, the pines stood thick and black in the hollows of its body, and when the wind came up the glen I could see them stir. My mother's people said the forest was a beast that had learned to wear a bear, and that the bear had learned to wear the forest in return, so that neither could ever be sure which of them was walking.

I laid the bread from my sack on a flat stone. The bear took it from the stone with a care that shamed the men in our hall, who would have snatched it. Then it turned and walked up the glen, and where its broad paws struck the wet earth, small green shoots lifted and bent towards the light.

When I went home I told no one. Each spring after that, I found new pines standing along the path the bear had taken. My brother, who had never believed a word of it, cut one for his hearth one winter, and the smoke that rose from it smelled of mountains he had never seen. He is still angry with me for being right.
