Walking bear on upper chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A bear walks left in profile, with its head lowered and one forepaw lifted. The fur is built from fine hatched lines and stippled dots, giving the body soft tonal shading against a bold outline. The animal sits centrally across the upper chest near the collarbone, with plain skin around it.

Sit yourself on that bench, the one with the pigeon muck, and mind your coat. The 4.10 is late again, and it has been late since they took the signal box down, so we may as well pass the time. You want to hear about the bear. Everybody on this platform knows about the bear, but they all tell it wrong.

It came up from the goods sidings in the February of the big freeze, when Mr Abernethy was still stationmaster and kept a tin of barley sugar in his waistcoat for the children. Nobody saw it arrive. There were only great prints in the frost along the down line, and then the porters found the milk churns knocked over and the ticket office cat sitting on the waiting room roof with its tail like a bottle brush.
Abernethy went out with a lamp. He said afterwards the bear was in no hurry at all. It walked the length of platform two with its head low, as if it were reading the rails, and at the far end it lifted one broad paw and held it there a moment, the way a man holds out his hand for a ticket he knows he left in another coat. Then it set the paw down, very politely, and went on towards the water tower.
They never caught it. What they did find, come spring, was a line of prints in the mud by the viaduct, every one of them pointing west, towards the coast. Abernethy kept one of those prints in a biscuit tin until the day he died. He used to say it was the only ticket he ever held that took him somewhere he hadn't been told to go.
Ah, there's the whistle. Mind the step, it's slippery where the bear went over.
