Back · Mixed · Photo

A larger bear and a smaller bear walk side by side in solid silhouette, both filled with a starry night-sky pattern. The fill blends deep blue, purple and red tones, with small white star highlights scattered across the bodies. The pair sits horizontally on the upper back near the shoulder blade, set against plain skin.

The cub had stopped again at the edge of the pine wood, nose lifted, refusing to go on until the last of the light had drained out of the valley. Her mother waited on the track below and did not hurry her. Bears, she had told her, were not made to be rushed by anything, least of all by a sky that was only getting darker.

Then the cub noticed the stars. They were coming out over the ridge one by one, pricking through the blue, and when she turned her head to look up, her mother saw something odd: the little bear's coat had caught them. Every dark patch of fur held a scatter of white points, and the purple and red of the dusk had soaked into her shoulders the way ink soaks into wet paper.

Nobody had told the cub that a night could be carried. Her mother had always said the sky was too far off to belong to anyone. But the cub padded down the track with the constellations rolling across her back, and her mother walked beside her with the same dark spread across her own broad coat, and the two of them went down into the valley, one bear following the other by the stars she carried.
