Bear on a bat within a C emblem on the chest
Traditional · Chest · Colour · Photo
A blue bear stands on a golden baseball bat that crosses the centre of a C-shaped emblem. The C is filled with blue panels holding pale stars and red and white diagonal stripes, all outlined in dark black linework with soft shading. The tattoo sits centrally on the chest against a close, warmly lit view of skin.

Mags Pennock had carved the bat from a length of ash the winter her husband stopped coming home from the mill, and she had oiled it every Sunday since, so the grain stood up gold in the low light over the green. The village had no team to speak of. It had eleven men who could not agree on a name and a field that flooded from the Cressy brook every March.

The bear came out of the beech wood on the first warm evening of May, when the boys were chalking the crease. Nobody saw it arrive. It simply sat on the boundary rope with its chin on its paws, watching the ball go up and come down, and when the carter's son finally swung and missed, the bear rose, took the bat from the grass in one unhurried paw, and tapped the stumps with a sound like a church bell.
They played that summer with the bear at short stop. It never threw a ball to anyone it did not like, and it never once let the lads from Harrow Dean take a run off it. By August the village had a name, painted in red and white along the pavilion roof, and a crowd came in from three parishes to watch.
Come the autumn, the wood went quiet and the bear did not return. Mags kept the bat leaning by the door, and on the first frost she found a single star-shaped leaf pressed into its grip.
