Galloping horse over American flag

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A brown horse with a dark flowing mane and tail gallops toward the viewer across a dusty ground, with a waving American flag of blue stars and red and white stripes behind it. The horse is rendered with soft blended shading and realistic detail, while the flag uses bold blue, red and white with fading edges. The composition is centred on the horse, with the flag filling the background and the ground at the bottom.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The flag had come off the wagon in a gust, and by the time Ruth Pettibone reached the field it was wound round the bay's near foreleg like a bandage on a bad sprain. Ruth didn't try to free it. She took the lead rope from the lad holding it, ran her palm down the gelding's neck, and waited for him to stop trying to kick the thing into the dust.

Walt had sold the ponies in March, and the goats in April, and the carousel's painted lion had gone to a museum in Omaha that Ruth had never heard of. The gelding was the last thing left on the list that nobody had paid for. A dealer from Ogallala was due at dusk with a trailer and a cheque that Walt kept folding and unfolding in his shirt pocket as if it might change its mind.

The wind swung round after supper and the flag cracked out flat above the trailers, all stripes and stars, the blue gone grey in the low light. The bay threw his head up at the sound. Ruth let go of the rope. He went down the length of the field with the cloth streaming off the wagon behind him, and for a moment the flag and the horse seemed to be one animal, mane and tail and bunting all pulling the same way toward the fence.

He came back to her at a walk, sides heaving, dust caked to his chest. The dealer's trailer turned in at the gate just then, headlights swinging across the grass. Walt watched the gelding nose the empty rope in Ruth's hand, then took the cheque from his pocket, looked at it a long time, and tore it cleanly along the fold.
