Captain America shield tearing through shoulder skin
Shoulder · Colour · Photo
The image shows a close view of a shoulder with a Captain America shield tattoo in red, white and blue, with a white star at its centre. Grey shading around the edges of the tattoo and along the torn outline creates the impression that the skin is ripping open to reveal the shield beneath. The shield fills the upper right of the frame against a dark background, with warm lighting on the skin.

Sit still, Eddie, and mind the kettle, because this is the one about the shield in the wall. My father swore it happened on the Tuesday after the big raid, when the goods shed at Thornley Junction took a hit and half the back wall of the booking hall came down like wet paper. Dust over everything. Porters with handkerchiefs over their faces, and a dog barking somewhere in the cutting that nobody ever claimed.

Under the plaster, where the brick had split in a jagged ring, somebody had painted a shield decades before. Red and white rings, a blue boss, and a white star in the middle, chalky as a gull's belly. Nobody knew who had put it there. Old Mrs Pryce at the buffet said it was a stationmaster's boy who wanted to be a soldier before he was tall enough. Mr Harrow in the signal box said it was a bet lost over a game of cards.
What my father remembered most was the morning after, when the sun came through the torn wall at a slant and lit that star like a lamp, and the whole staff stood there in their caps and said nothing at all. The 7.40 to Carlisle ran late that day, and nobody minded. They left the shield up until the builders came with their hoardings, and then they plastered it over. But the plaster never sat quite flat, and on wet nights you can still see the rim of it pushing up through the cream, as if it has its own opinion about being hidden.
