Bearded man in profile line drawing
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black line drawing of a man's head and shoulders in right-facing profile, with swept back hair, a full curled beard and a collar. The outlines are heavy and even, with fine hatched strokes in the hair and beard, and small dotted guide lines across the face. The drawing is done in black ink on pale paper, with no colour and a plain, uncluttered background.

The snow shut the Hollin Pass on Tuesday, and by Thursday the Crook and Lantern had nothing left to burn but the settle. You kept the ledger that winter, because Mrs Abbot's hand shook and yours did not. When the stranger came in stamping, collar turned up against the wind and beard already crusted white, he signed the book as Thomas Vane, Carlisle, and asked for the room over the stable, the one with the window onto the road.

He did not sleep. You heard him through the boards, pacing, and in the morning there was a sheet of brown paper on the bar with a face drawn on it in ink, turned towards the window as if listening for something. Beneath it, in small careful capitals: THE LAMP AT HOLLIN BRIDGE, THURSDAY, WHEN THE CART COMES. You asked him what it meant. He only smoothed the paper flat with his thumb and said you had caught the line of his jaw better than the constable ever had.
Nobody had told you the constable was looking for a man. Nobody had told you the Carlisle bank had lost a strongbox that Michaelmas, or that a curled beard could be the easiest thing in the world to draw from memory. But the snow kept falling and the lamp at the bridge was a short walk down the road, so at dusk you took your coat and the drawing both.
The lamp was lit. There was no cart. There was only a single line of prints in the drift, going one way, and a dark figure at the far end of the bridge, collar up, face turned away from you towards the water, waiting for a signal that would never come. You stood there a long while, then folded the paper once, put it in your pocket, and walked back to the inn to finish the ledger.
