Bearded man portrait tattoo on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a bearded male face framed by flowing, wind-swept hair and a full beard, with a raised lock of hair above the forehead. It is built from soft grey shading and fine tonal gradations that give the skin, brow and eyes a sculpted, three-dimensional look. The design fills the forearm, with the dark background of the photo and the skin around the edges keeping the focus on the face.

Nobody at the Harrowgate reunion could agree on who had carried the bust down from the attic of the old grammar school, only that it had been up there since the war, and that its eyes had followed the Year Eleven girls across the gym floor. Mrs Pell swore it was the caretaker's joke. The caretaker had been dead eleven years.

Dinner was cold chicken and trifle on trestle tables. Tom Ayling, who had sat in front of that bust every morning for five years, stood to make his speech and found his notes had gone to wet paper in his hand. He said the thing had a lock of stone hair above its brow that lifted whenever the weather was about to turn. Somebody laughed. Then the window by the fire door rattled, though nothing outside was moving, and the lock of hair on the bust rose slowly, as if a draught had found it.

The room went quiet. Mrs Pell, who had taught them Latin and never once raised her voice, stood up from her chair. Her mother's people in the valley had a saying, she told them: a stone keeps what is promised in the room where it stands. Ask it plainly and it will answer plainly. Tom, pale under the strip lights, asked it whether he would ever leave the town. The hair hung still for a long moment. Then it fell flat, and no one could say which way it had been blowing.

The next morning the bust was back in the attic, dust grey on its beard. Someone had written on the plinth in chalk, in a hand none of them recognised. It said, Not yet.
