Bearded stone-effect face on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo of a bearded male face, shaded to look like carved stone with a classical sculpted appearance. Swirling hair and beard are rendered with raised, highlighted curls, and the forehead, brow and nose are modelled with soft grey shading. The tattoo fills most of the frame on an upper arm, with a partial second tattoo of a woman's face visible at the right edge.

The stone head had travelled with Halloran's Circus for forty winters, wrapped in tarpaulin in the back of the lion wagon, because nobody would buy it and nobody would let it go. It came, the old hands said, off a sea wall in a town the tide had taken, and the water had left it with its beard still full of weed. Every spring Tobias Fenn, the ringmaster, unwrapped it on the sawdust and asked the same thing: would the big top stand another season?

The head never answered in words. But on still nights the curls of its beard would lift and turn, slow as wet rope, and whoever was awake to see it knew the answer was no. Takings had fallen every year since the war. The elephants went first, then the high wire, then the girl who could bend backwards through a hoop. Only the head stayed, and only the head seemed content with the damp and the crows.
In the last winter Ilse, who mended the canvas and had no patience for old men's fables, climbed onto the wagon with a lamp and a hammer. She meant to knock the head loose so they could sell it for scrap. As she raised the hammer, the beard turned under the lamplight, and she saw that the carved mouth was open, the way a mouth opens to call someone in out of the rain. She set the hammer down.
They did not sell it. In spring they raised the big top one last time, and the head sat on a trestle at the centre of the ring while the village came to look. Nobody paid. The wind came under the canvas, the curls of the beard rose and fell, and the old ringmaster, hat in his hands, bowed to it as if it had finally given him leave to stop.
