Realistic woman's face with snakes on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic portrait of a woman's face sits at the centre of the design, with a snake wrapped around her head and body. A second snake, mouth open and fangs showing, rises from the bottom of the piece. The shading is smooth and detailed, using only black ink and greys against a dark background.

The last canvas tent of the Halloran Brothers' Travelling Circus sagged under three days of sleet on the common outside Halifax, and Mirela Vance was the only one who still bothered to check the guy ropes. The lions had gone to a sanctuary in March. The strongman sold his barbells to a scrap man in Wakefield. What remained was the Serpent Tent, a rented pavilion with a single lamp, a crate of grey grass snakes, a boa that had outlived two owners, and a lurcher named Admiral who slept on the costume trunk.

Mirela had inherited the act from her grandmother, who had inherited it from a man nobody would name. The routine was simple. Walk in, lift the largest snake from the basket, let it climb her arm like ivy, and watch the front row go quiet. For thirty years the crowd had paid for that quiet. Tonight there were four people in the seats, two of them asleep, and the ringmaster was in the caravan counting what was left of the float.
She stood before the mirror and wound the boa around her shoulders, then unwound it, then wound it again. Her grandmother had always said the trick was not to look at the snake at all. Look past it. Let them look at you. Mirela studied her own face, pale under the lamp, and thought of the fangs in the crate that would not come out for her any more.
When the ringmaster finally pushed through the flap, she was already halfway into the spotlight, the boa slack around her neck like a shawl. He stopped. Nobody spoke. Then Mirela lifted the coiled length of it, slow and deliberate, and the lamp caught the scales so they glittered almost silver. "Tonight," she said, "they'll pay to watch me leave."
