Bearded tentacled figure and skull coin on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A realistic portrait of an older bearded man whose beard and hair are rendered as octopus tentacles, set against a golden skull coin with ornate carved borders. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth gradients in the face and tentacles. The palette is dominated by warm oranges, ochres and yellows, with greens and blues in the background and beard, and the design fills the forearm against a black backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Cook Maddox had salted the pork for eleven days when the thing came up through the scuttle, wet to the elbows and grinning like a drowned uncle. It wanted only the coin. Everyone aboard the Marigold knew about the coin, the one the carpenter had pried from a sunken Spanish chest off the Scillies and nailed to the galley beam for luck. It was gold, thin as a biscuit, with a skull in the middle and a ring of carved teeth around the edge, and the men said it was the only honest thing aboard.

The figure at the scuttle had a face like a wet sail, grey-gold and creased, and where a beard should have been there was a writhing crown of arms, each one the colour of old brass, each one feeling along the boards as if reading them. Maddox did not ask its name. In his experience a thing that rose out of the bilge to bargain was owed nothing but a fair price, and he was a cook, so he knew about prices.

"Bread," it said, in a voice like a barrel rolled over shingle. "And the coin, and the sea will leave you be."

Maddox cut a heel from the loaf and set it on the table. Then he took the coin down from the beam, but he did not hand it over. He held it up to the lamp so the skull caught the light, and told the creature that a coin nailed to a galley beam had been nailed there for a reason, and that a cook who wanted his ship to sail home ought to know what the reason was. The arms went still. One by one they drew back into the dark like wrack pulled on a retreating tide, and the bread stayed where it lay, and the coin stayed warm in Maddox's palm.
