Realistic skull with 666 on the hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic skull with deep shadows and highlights fills the back of the hand, with the numbers 666 in bold black lettering across the brow. The shading is smooth and detailed, with wispy smoke-like forms curling above the skull and along the fingers. The image is shown in black and grey against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pargeter wanted the bonfire lit before the rain, and I had been raking leaves off the lawn since seven to make it happen. The smoke from the heap rolled low over the cabbages and into the glasshouse, where the tomatoes had been sulking all week. I told her the damp would push the smoke down into the beds. She said it was the only thing in the garden that did what it was told.

Nobody had dug under the old pear tree in forty years, so when my spade rang on something hard I assumed a brick. It was a skull, the colour of weak tea, with a clean crack through one eye socket. Someone had burned three sixes into the brow with a hot nail, neat as a stamp, and the grooves were still black. Mrs Pargeter came to the edge of the bed with her hand over her mouth, then laughed and said her husband Derek had buried his old dog somewhere along that wall and never mentioned it. Derek had also never liked the number six.

We set the skull on the potting bench. The smoke kept finding its way in through the door, curling round the bone, and for a moment the sockets looked full of it. She asked me to put it back where it had come from. I said we ought to tell someone. She said the bone had waited forty years without complaint and could wait one afternoon more.

In the end we did neither. I scrubbed at the sixes with a wire brush, which only made them shine, and Mrs Pargeter pressed a packet of white sweet peas into my hand. We planted them over the spot before the rain came, and by dusk the smoke from the heap had thinned to a grey thread above the wall. She said Derek would have approved. I did not ask her how she knew what Derek would have approved of.
