Black and grey skeleton and horned figure sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full sleeve tattoo wraps the arm from upper arm to forearm, with a skeleton and string-like lines at the top, a triangle enclosing an eye in the middle, and a seated horned figure with snakes and flames below. The work uses detailed greyscale shading with smooth gradients and high contrast against the dark background. The composition stacks the motifs vertically along the arm, with the figure at the bottom and the skeleton at the top, against a plain light backdrop.

Dear Nell,

We pitched at the top of the common last Tuesday, under a sky the colour of wet slate, and Mr Vell had the big banner hung before the generator was even warm. You'll remember the one with the goat-headed gent seated on his throne with the snakes coiled round his wrists, the flames licking up behind him like he'd just stepped out of a hearth. The boys say he's the fair's old landlord. I say he's a good deal better company than the man who paid us to haul him.
Hector has taken over the fiddle booth since Sam went off with the Hallows lot. He plays the thing with the bone strings, the one shaped like a skeleton with its ribs for a sound box. Nobody sees him tuning it, but every night at dusk he sits on the upturned crate and draws the bow across those strings and the crowd goes quiet as a church. Last night a girl in a yellow coat asked him whose bones they were. He told her they were the bones of the last fiddler who lied about his wages, and she laughed, but I saw Hector's face when he said it, and it wasn't a joke.
Above the stalls, on the painted canvas over the ticket hut, there's an eye inside a triangle, and under it the words that Mr Vell insists must be on every board: Look Twice, Pay Once. Tonight the lamp caught it and the eye seemed to blink. I went to the ticket hut to tell him and found the cash tin empty and the till open, and a single coin lying face up on the counter, warm to the touch. Heads, the horned gent. Tails, the eye.
I haven't told Hector. I'm not sure I want to know which side I'll be paying on.
Write soon. Your loving brother, Tom
