Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Carrow House would say the beast was cruel. It was only large, and it came up the service stair when the lights failed, and it smelled of wet coal and bread left out too long. Old Mrs Haddow on eleven set a saucer of milk outside her door every night, and every morning the saucer was clean and the milk was gone, and she said that was manners.

The council sent a man with a clipboard in the spring. He wanted the stairwell painted and the lift mended, and he wanted the beast moved on. He stood on the landing with his torch and said the word beast twice, loudly, as if a name could be shouted into being gone. Then the stair creaked below him, and there came a sound like someone breathing through a sack, and he went back down without his clipboard.
Haddow's granddaughter Lena had been reading in the lift lobby with a library book open on her knees. She was not afraid of it. The book said a beast only listens to the person who writes its true name on a wall, so she took the chalk from her coat pocket and wrote on the cracked tiles beside the stairs the one word nobody had ever called it: Beauty. The lights came back on at once. Far below, the beast made a low sound that might have been a laugh.
In the morning the saucer on eleven was full of milk that nobody had poured. Beside Lena's chalk, in letters as rough as a sawn gate, someone had scratched the other half of the name, and a fine black dust lay along the tiles like the ash of a fire that had gone out kindly. The lift, for the first time in years, carried everyone all the way to the top.
