Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of the side of a finger bearing the words til death in thin, black, cursive script. The linework is fine and even, with the letters running diagonally along the finger. The image is in black and grey, with a soft, blurred background of blue and brown tones and a neutral skin tone.

The ring came across my counter on a wet Thursday, wrapped in a bus timetable for a route that no longer runs. The man who brought it had river mud under his nails and would not look at the scales. Brass, he said. Eleven pounds. I turned it over under the lamp and found the inside worn smooth, and scratched there, so small I needed the glass, two words in a looping hand: til death.

Most of what comes to me has a story attached like a price tag. Wedding bands, fishing reels, a clarinet with the reed still in its case. I have learned to take the story and set it aside, the way you set aside a coat in the rain. What I write in the ledger is weight, metal and the date. But whoever cut those letters had been patient. Each stroke had been gone over twice, the way a person traces a name on a headstone to be sure of it.
I asked him whose it was. He said it had been his sister's, then said that was not quite true, then said he did not know what he was supposed to do with it now, which I believed more than the first two things. I offered him twelve. He took eleven and folded the notes into the timetable with the same care he had used to wrap the ring.
After he left, I sat with the ring for a long while. Then I took down the old ticket book with the faded green cover and wrote in the description column: plain band, brass, inscribed inside. I left the words out. Some promises belong to the people who made them, and a shop like this has no use for them.
