Family script lettering on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the word Family written in flowing cursive script across the inner forearm, with long tails and loops extending above and below the letters. The linework is solid black with smooth, even lines and some tapering at the strokes. The image is a close crop on skin tone with a plain, softly blurred background and no colour ink.

Dear Nan, the bus from Keswick dropped me at the top of the pass at half past six, and the cloud was sitting right on the road like a wet sheet. I didn't mind. Dad's old torch worked, which surprised us both, and I followed the drystone wall the way you told me, past the sheep that look at you like you owe them rent. The sign for the bothy had lost its bottom letters, so I trusted the arrow and not the word.

The bothy keeper is a woman called Maren who runs a stove that smokes if you breathe on it. She gave me the bunk nearest the fire and a tin of oatcakes, and she asked who I was walking for. I said nobody, which wasn't true, and she looked at me until I said it was for the family. She nodded as if that settled something and went back to her crossword. I thought about your handwriting on the back of that recipe card, all those loops that ran off the edge of the page, and I wondered whether anyone ever tells the loops they're allowed to stop.
The cloud lifted at dawn, just enough to show the ridge curling round us like a ribbon someone had pulled tight. I took a photograph for you, though it came out mostly grey, so I'm enclosing the good bit of the view in pencil instead. Tell Mum I've eaten properly. Tell her the stove still smokes.
Love, your Eli
