The one she watched was easy to pick out. It had a little red heart on its chest, bright as a cherry, and it ignored the lavender entirely. Every morning it worked the pink mallow by the privy wall, then flew back to the hive with its legs yellow with dust, then came out again and went straight back to the mallow, as though it had been given an errand nobody had explained to it.
On the sill of the back bedroom sat Walter's tobacco tin, still full of the pressed flowers he had gathered for her in the spring of 1962. Nell lifted the lid. Among the dried petals lay a single mallow head, pink and papery, the same colour as the one by the wall.
She went out in her slippers, bent over the flower, and let the bee walk onto her finger. She carried it inside, past the hives and the empty chair, and set it on the sill beside the tin. Then she left the window open.
