Bee with dashed flight path on an arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A bee is tattooed on skin, shown in profile with its white wings raised and a dotted line curling behind it as if tracing its flight. The bee has bold black outlines, yellow and orange banded abdomen and solid black detailing, with the wings left mostly light. The bee sits centrally on a softly lit, slightly blurred arm against a pale background.

The carter's wife at Salt Wells kept a jar of honey she would never sell, because the bees that made it had come down from the mountains behind the road, and she said they knew the way home. Nobody believed her until the spring the water tanks ran dry and the mail rider went out past the third milestone and did not come back.

Her son Tobias rode after him on a grey mule, with a cloth full of crushed figs and a tin dish of water tied to the saddle. At the fourth milestone the road split into four tracks that all looked the same, and the wind had smoothed every hoofprint. He sat down in the shade of a dead creosote bush and cried, the way boys do when no one is watching.
A bee came down out of the white sky, then another, then a thread of them, each one looping away and back again. Where they flew, the air seemed to hold a faint line, dash and dash and a curl, and then on towards the east. Tobias got up, took the mule by its bridle and followed the line on foot all afternoon. It ended at a rock with a rusted tin lid propped against it, and the mail rider was sitting in the rock's shade with his boots off and a bee walking slowly across his thumb.
Tobias brought him home on the mule. The wife set the jar on the table and did not say I told you so. Afterwards, people at Salt Wells said you could still see the bees' line over the road on early mornings, if you knew to look, and the children always walked it with their fingers before school.
