Bee within a laurel wreath on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A bee is shown in the centre, with shaded black and grey body segments and translucent wings washed in red. A laurel wreath of leaves curves around it, ending at the bottom in two daisies and a stem tied with a ribbon. The linework is clean and the shading is soft, with the bee's body and leaves given depth through greyscale tones.

The honey crate came through the back door at ten to four, smelling of smoke and clover, and Hilde was already swearing at it before I had my boots laced. She said the bee man was early, and that bees did not keep the bakery's hours.

Tomasz had wrapped the comb in waxed paper and tied a bunch of daisies from his allotment to the handle with brown string, the way his mother used to do at the market in Gdansk, he had once told me. We stood the daisies in a jam jar on the proving shelf because there was nowhere else for them. Above the door the old painted laurel crown had flaked to grey, and Hilde had never let anyone touch it, not even to scrape off the rust.

We worked the dough in the blue hour. Hilde folded, I shaped, and when I reached for the honey I found a bee walking slow circles on the lid, its wings the colour of cherry juice when I held them up to the lamp. It had come in with the comb. I thought about the cold outside and how little chance it had among the flour.

I carried the crate to the step, tipped the lid, and watched the bee lift away over the wet cobbles. When I came back in, the first loaves were rising in their baskets and Hilde had the window open, the sky over the rooftops just beginning to pale. She said nothing about the bee. She only put a jar of honey in my hand and told me to taste it before the morning took it.
